Groovy Lake Barcroft Newcomers 70's (with some 60's) Barge Party 2013

Our community never ceases to offer the most wonderful social events to its residents year after year. This year, our annual Barge Party took place at the home of Trippi and Tom Penland, and it was a winner. The theme was the 70's, with a bit of 60's mixed in, and it was interpreted in more ways than you can imagine.

Arriving....Former Newcomer's Club President, Miranda (right) with friend Beverly.

Ready to party, Newcomer's President Nomi with Marilyn, Betsy, and Kevin Howe, always prepared.

Here's the groovy flower power girl, Olivia, decked out in the era's finest, flanked by sisters Louise (left) and Sarah:

Why did this couple's 70's not include disco or remnants of 60's flower power? I think they got a bit mixed up. The theme was the NINETEEN 70's! But the invitation wasn't specific, true, so here's Seth and Diane, celebrating the 1770's!

Party hosts, Trippi and Tom.

Partygoers appeared in leisure suits, headbands, amazing wide collars, peace medallions, flowered shirts, earth mother dresses, caftans, tie-die, John Lennon glasses, and you name it. Didn't see any John Travolta look alikes however.

Ok, there were some wild ideas of 70's fashion.  Love the gold velour track suit!

"Peace, Brother"....Missy and Jeff

This was quite a collar on leisure suited Mike.

The party began with cocktails, hors d'oeuvres, and barge trips, and our beautiful lake as the background was as magical as ever.

Then there was the food...announced by Captain Matt, the human megaphone.

Wow, gorgeous, and delicious food.

With tiki torches, too! Nice touch.

Nightfall, and the party began in earnest with drinking, music and dancing. All had great fun.

Having a party? I do take assignments and can make you a great set of professional party photography photos. Packages include  your choice of any combination of digital images for posting online, custom prints and/or a photobook.

Kids and Festivals

The Falls Church News Press hired me to shoot the Taste of Falls Church and The Falls Church Fall Festival 2013 last weekend. The photos were published on their website today (http://bit.ly/19Jl15L) but I wanted to share some of my favorites here, the kids. I think I captured some great expressions.

Hope you like them.

If you are looking to capture those special expressions of your own children or grandchildren, nieces or nephews, contact me for an appointment and for framable prints, digital images to share, or a photobook. I'll spend some time with you and the children at the location of your choice, and with my trusty Canon professional gear, I will create lasting memories that your family will treasure forever.

Back on the Lake

After many months of recovering from a knee injury, I took the kayak out on a picture perfect, dry, clear late afternoon. Over the summer, the knee had to be protected from any potential sudden lateral movement, and getting in and out of a kayak was thus risky up to now.

So a quick paddle from Beach 3 around to the Potterton Bridge and back was all I could muster, but I did catch a few images to share here.

More to come as the bird migration gets underway and hopefully we'll have a lot of stopovers on the Lake.

By the way, the image in the blog title is from a bike ride down the Holmes Run Trail, just south of Columbia Pike.

More Party Time Photography: Lake Barcroft Village Island Party

My photography takes me in all directions. Here, I photographed a local event, the Island Party, for our local "aging in place" organization known as Lake Barcroft Village.

We are so fortunate to live in a community made up of terrific people who truly care about one another. Over a year ago, a group of dedicated residents came up with the plans to create Lake Barcroft Village, an organization that supports our older residents who wish to continue living in the community as they age instead of moving to a separate retirement community or similar institution. The Village is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization made up of an board of directors elected by the membership, and staffed by volunteers. The Village offers a variety of programs and services to members including classes, transportation, grocery shopping, light household maintenance, cultural and social programs.

As a volunteer, I write a monthly story about the Village for the Lake Barcroft News, and provide photographic coverage of Village events. Our latest event, the Island Party, was a huge success, and my photographs of that event follow.

Hosted in the beautiful lakeside home of neighbors Dennis and Susan, decorated in island themes, we shared great food, great camaraderie, and even music and dancing,  making for a delightful evening for all.

I was asked to do a group shot of everyone at the party, representing members and volunteers of Lake Barcroft Village. Here, President Carl Neuberg gathers folks together.

Here is the final shot. Wondering how I got down there? No, I didn't Photoshop myself in. I set up the camera, exposure, composition, and Carole sacrificed her being in the photo to take this great shot of the group.

The evening was topped off with piano music played by Ron Martinson. Ron is a great entertainer, and together with wife Wanda, in the yellow lei, party attendees enjoyed a variety of songs from old standards to the country love song "I Wish I Was a Teddy Bear."
